Meet the Maker with Sky Siouki

Sky Siouki

Sky Siouki is a Bristol-based independent homeware brand; with a focus on hand-drawn wildlife illustrations and sustainable luxury. Sky’s products are made in the UK using natural, high quality materials, fulfilling her aim to offer a unique range of beautiful and ethical products.

When and why did you begin your business?
After graduating from Nottingham Trent University in 2013 with a degree in Textile Design, I decided that starting my own business was the best option for me. I prefer to work to my own briefs and am a very stubborn and determined person, so I knew it was the right path.

Tell us about your studio.
I work from my home studio which was once an upstairs bathroom. I know working from home isn't for everyone but personally I love it. Having the flexibility to play loud music, make a cooked lunch or take a quick break to get some bread dough on the go is great. I always start the day with some exercise and make sure to get dressed properly, even if it is into something comfy, so that I feel motivated each day. I also have two kittens who do a great job of keeping me company during the day.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
My main inspiration comes from the natural world and modern art. The current design collection Flight focuses on the ethereal beauty of birds. It features detailed studies of various different bird species amongst abstract painted landscapes and rugged foliage.

What would you like to do more of?
I'm currently working on a painting commission which is something I would love to do more of. I love creating original artwork but paintings aren't always reliable income, so my range of prints and homewares really help to keep my business thriving.
 Any regrets?
My only regret would be if I hadn’t given starting my own business a try. It's been a very up and down journey and by no means easy, but I'm so proud to be where I am now.

What’s your isolation tip?
I've recently begun writing 3 positive things down at the end of each day. It's a great practice even outside of lockdown but is especially helpful if life is getting you down.
